Frosty Nutz and Wacky Hat rallies
A letter to the uninitiated, by John Barry
At the urging of Bob Pipes I have decided to write this to all of you that have recently joined the club and haven't really participated in (m)any club events. I want to start this out by saying that I know how you feel when you open up the Boxer Shorts, OTL or BMW-ON and read about upcoming rallies in either far away lands or your backyard. And although I consider myself somewhat outgoing (some would say obnoxiously so) it took me a while to even get up the nerve to ask what I have to do to attend a Rally. I have only been a member since July 1996 and after coming to some meetings and hearing about this "ride", and that "rally", I finally thought that I should attend one. Anyway, enough about me, the point of this is to get you all to come even if you feel shy about showing up at a campsite for the first time, don't worry only Sleddogs bite.
In the spring the club holds the FROSTY NUTZ RALLY to get people out and together after the winter hibernation and in the fall we wind down the camping with the WACKY HAT. Now the secret to having a good time at one of these events is by bringing your sense of humor, long underwear and raingear not in any particular order. During the day we try to get out and have ride in-groups if the weather permits, and hang around a campfire at night trying to forget about how cold it is by telling each other riding stories.
Now that I have told you what they are I will tell you where they are, as of this year I am going to hold both rallies at Jamaica State Park in Jamaica Vermont. Now everybody get out your maps and look at the area, it is not that far away, there are some great restaurants nearby, hot showers and most notably some of my favorite roads.
So I promise when you show up this May you will be able to ask how these events came to be, what you can expect at rallies this summer (A.K.A. why you need to convince the spouse that this IS a vacation), and most importantly "how outrageous does my hat have to be to win the coveted WACKY HAT TROPHY.
