March Meet: Stone's Public House Rocks!
Sunday was warm and dry enough for the Yankee
Beemers to show the folks at Stone's Public
House that we really are a motorcycle gang
and not some kind of cage rattling breakfast
klatsch. The lot was loosely packed with
112 motorcycles including a host of BMW wannabe's
such as 2 red Ducati's, ST2 and ST3, a black
Monster 800 S.I.E., a blue S4R, and a Cagiva
Canyon; there were Suzuki's SV 650, and V
Strom DL 650; a Honda CB 750, and another
UJM trailer queen; a Valkyrie F6; and an
absolutely gorgeous black Yamahaha 500 Single.
Although there were no new BMW R1200GS's,
there was one black and white Rockster, a
reminder to start saving for that new bike
we will always want.
The newly anointed breakfast committee, comprised of Fred Kolack, Richard McElroy, Muriel Farrington, Karl Neugebauer and Don Lapierre served a fine meal at precisely 8:30. Fred collected the $10 tariff from 99 hungry riders who were treated to Stone's delicious and hearty breakfast. There were three kinds of Irish bread with fresh creamery butter, scrambled eggs, French Toast smothered in Stone's signature brandy-rum-maple-banana sauce, sizzling savory snappy skinned sausages, robust rashers of bacon, hedonistic home fries, cantaloupe and honey dew melons, fresh grapefruit juice, and endless flagons of imported coffee and tea.
Most galloping gourmands dined out front on the patio, enjoying the kind of weather that makes New England so attractive at the end of an endless winter.
President Kit Wise launched the business
part of the meeting using the granite steps
to the dining area as his pulpit. There were
lots of riding opportunities to discuss beginning
with Borella's annual Spring Pizza Ride rescheduled
for that very day. A group led by Angus Crowe
was heading out after the meeting for Borella's
estate, on Route 6 in Danielson, CT, 10 -
noon for coffee, snacks, tire kicking &
celebrating the return of spring. From there
they would ride to the Pizza King Restaurant
which s located on a picturesque lakefront
in the middle of nowhere.
In preparation for his annual Memorial Day Parker's Maple Barn ride, Dave Harmacek announced a pre-function test ride for Monday, April 19, open to everyone who wasn't running in the Boston Marathon. This group was scheduled to rendezvous at the 99 Restaurant in Westford, MA for the trek to NH.
Vanson Leather's spring open house would be held Thursday April 2 through Sunday April 25. In addition to bargain prices on high end riding gear in both leather and ballistic nylon, Vanson's has many vintage bikes on display throughout their showroom and serves a generous complimentary barbecue.
Dana's annual spring ride to Gould's was scheduled for Saturday, April 24. Gould's serves the best pancakes and waffles, homemade pickles, sausage, and more. Riders were told to meet up at the Boxcar Restaurant, Route 2 in Erving, MA by 9:30 with empty tanks and full bladders (just seeing if you're paying attention.)
Tony's track Day was scheduled for April 26 at New Hampshire International Speedway. Doug Morrison recommended track days such as this as one of the best ways to improve your overall riding skills in a safe and controlled environment. Plus, you get to go fast and no one will bust you.
Frosty Nuts will mark the official end of
the off camping season at Jamaica, VT state
park. Campers will be able to sleep under
the stars and enjoy the camaraderie that
builds around the campfires by night, while
enjoying Vermont's twisties by day with a
minimum of four-wheel traffic during this
between season weekend. This is the first
scheduled campout for the year and the weather,
well, put it this way: whether it's cold,
or whether it's hot, we're going to have
weather, whether or not. Your faithful scribe
(a Navy man, you see) slept his first night
in a tent ever, at the Frosty Nuts campout
in 1996, and has been hooked on motorcycle
camping ever since.
Dave Harmacek announced that May 8 would be YB Day at Second Wind Motorcycles in Merrimack, NH. There will be free eats, demo rides, door prizes, and great deals on new wheels.
YB Editor in Chief Victor Cruz announced the Ride the Peaks for Diane Pleines Fund Raiser, May 22 - 23. 7:00 a.m. Departure (changed) from Stone's Public House, 179 Main St. Ashland, MA. Donation is $200 and includes Ramada Inn stay, lunches, summit fees and Lake Champlain ferry ticket. Registration: PO Box 85, Dover MA 02030. Victor Cruz 508-785-1590.
Fred Burgess announced the 9th running of The Black Fly, a no-host rolling motorcycle rally Memorial Day weekend - just before black fly season. This year's route will include northern New England, Quebec, and possibly New Brunswick. You must have at least 10,000 miles riding experience, a motorcycle displacement of at least 600cc, be prepared for all kinds of riding conditions and weather including rain, and possibly snow. Heated clothing is highly recommended. Participants receive a pre-rally packet with all information prior to the event. A $25 fee covers registration and a unique embroidered shirt. You are responsible for your own meals and camping/hotel fees. More details at: BlackFly@regent.com. Attendance is limited to 25 by RSVP ONLY. Please send a non-refundable check for $25.00 pp, payable to Fred Burgess, PO Box 206, Brunswick, Maine 04011.
Kit pointed out that he had done the Black Fly tour last year when it rained the whole time, and we all had a fabulous time.
Chuck Clapham provided a bike vs. deer update: proper riding gear can make a huge difference in the outcome if you encounter a deer. Best bet is to avoid riding at dusk, which is when the little tykes seem to assault the most riders.
Newcomers were introduced: Luis Nunes from New Bedford, riding a '91 R100; Steve Grey, Essex, R1150RS; Rob English, Wrentham, '96 R1100RT; and Karl Sesto, Newbury, R1100R.
Door prizes included two $62 50:50 awards to Fred Castellucci and Larry Freitas, and a set of Patriot coffee mugs donated by Karl Neugebaur that went to Irene Boettcher, Best Maine Winner of prizes.
Next month's meeting will be June 13, 2004, at Stone's, full breakfast at 8:30, meeting at 9:30.
